To get the 131 Abarth homologated for Group 4 competition and to replace the aging 124 Abarth, Fiat produced a road-going version, sold in limited numbers that added to a few hundred only. Launched at the 1976 edition of the Geneva Motor Show, the 131 Abarth Rally got the same engine as the competition version, but a little 'civilized', with the four-cylinder 2.0-litre 16-valve engine developing 140bhp, making for a really quick car given that it weighed under a ton! Other changes from the regular saloon car included redesigned body parts in plastic, a modified suspension, special wheels and a sporty interior. With its competition version that was stronger and lighter and with a max power of over 200bhp, the Fiat 131 Abarth won the World Rally Championship three times: in 1977, 1978 and 1980. These successes helped improve the image of the Italian carmaker markedly.
Delivered new in Arezzo, Tuscany, the Fiat 131 Abarth on offer has remained stored in the garage of a Fiat dealer, where it was part of a large collection. Since then, the car has hardly been used, with the odometer displaying just 10,000km, which explains the extraordinarily original condition for a car of this type. The bodywork is in excellent condition and the interior offers the look of a car that is almost new. The mechanicals are completely original and the engine is equipped with the carburetor and air filter from the origin. A maintenance operation was conducted recently, in particular replacing the timing belt, engine seals and the water pump. It is extremely rare to get hold of a car of this type that has not been modified or abused, with so little mileage.
